Participation in the Mille Miglia is limited to makes and models of cars, manufactured between 1927 and 1957, that took part in at least one of the original Mille Miglia races. These cars must be exclusively originals. Replicas, even partial ones, are not permitted to enter.
To enter the Mille Miglia, the configuration of the car should not diverge from the original series. Any modifications made to the car must be thoroughly documented and must have been made to the specific exemplar during the period in which it participated in an original Mille Miglia speed race.
All cars must comply with FIA and FIVA regulations which require proper certification for participating cars. As per international regulations, cars are required to have a FIA Heritage Certificate and/or CSAI papers and/or a FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) Identity Card issued by the car’s country of origin (ANS).
As per tradition, the number of participating cars will be limited to 375. Since the number of requests for participation in the Mille Miglia greatly exceeds the number of available places, a strict criterion of rotation of models will be applied, with precedence given as follows:
- cars which have participated in previous original Mille Miglia speed races (documentary evidence must be provided)
- cars which have been officially entered in previous original Mille Miglia speed races (documentary evidence must be provided)
- cars with a sporting history, which have appeared on Palmares Winner’s Lists of regularity events of international significance
Under no circumstances will a car built after 1957 be permitted to enter, though cars built before 1927 may be accepted, provided models of these took part in the Mille Miglia up until 1930.
A comment on the periods of selection and the cars admitted
Unlike other events, the Authorities permit the commemoration of the Mille Miglia a maximum of only 375 participant cars.
These 375 cars admitted to the start are selected from those which are pre-entered, in the first place, eliminating those models that never competed in one of the 24 speed races, in compliance with article 3 of the notification of concession.
The remaining pre-entered cars are then examined on the basis of homologation certificates sent, photographs representing the current state of a car and its conformity to the original model, as well as any other documents that illustrate not only historic continuity, but also the possible sports history.
Cars able to demonstrate their participation in a Mille Miglia of speed, which satisfy the requirements of conformity to the original model and historic continuity, are the first to be selected.
The remaining invited cars are singled out on the basis of the historic period to which they belong until reaching the objectives listed in the “Target” column of the following table, obtained by sub-dividing the 375 cars in a proportional manner to the participants of the races of every period in respect of the total number of participants in the 24 races. Once again, correspondence with the original model and historic continuity constitute elements of preference.
The selection of the remaining admissible cars up to the 375 is affected, in parity with other conditions, giving preference to those belonging to older periods. In the columns headed “2008” “2009”, "2010" and “2011” of the following table are indicated the cars, on the basis of the historic period to which they belong, admitted to the start of the last four commemorations.
We repeat that the period of historic membership is not the year of construction of the candidate car, but the year of the first participation of that model of car in the Mille Miglia, indicated in the column “Year for the calculation coefficient” in the list of cars able to become candidates published on the site.
Note how the cars admitted pertaining to the period from 1930 to 1952 have not reached pre-fixed objectives in the last edition and that, therefore, examples of models that could be candidates pertaining to this period have a greater chance of being accepted in relation to subsequent periods.
With parity of period and in respect of the list of cars that can become candidates, we want to privilege the variety of the participant models, giving obvious preference to those which, while being admissible and originals, rarely participate in the commemoration even though they competed in the Mille Miglia speed race, perhaps even in significant number.

On the basis of the information in the above table, which shows the entry target for the 2012 commemoration sub-divided by periods of the cars’ construction, the organisation invites, in particular, the participation of those included in the period from 1930 to 1952.
